15 April 15 1920 – 8 September 2012

It has just been drawn to my attention that Thomas Szasz has died. He had grown up a Hungarian, though he spent most of his life in the United States:
A generation or so ago Thomas Szasz's thinking was a major factor in contributing to the world view of humane, rational people. He stood right outside the dominant biologised understandings of human nature and the notion of 'treatment' that were so powerful in his time and seem again to be swamping more rational and humane voices.
Now in the twenty-first century the barbarians' cooking fires burn again in the abandoned Forum.
I cannot help thinking of an obvious parallel...
